Mizanplas Wine Club - Edition #4 (FOR UK RESIDENTS ONLY!)
Edition #4: Against Fashion
Wine has its fashions. Grapes disappear and return. Regions fall from grace and are rediscovered. Yesterday’s peasant wine becomes tomorrow’s allocation. For Edition #4, we chose three wines that seem particularly indifferent to the noise. None was made to catch the moment. In their own ways, all three have taken the long road.
This edition includes:
Sylvain Pataille, Bourgogne Aligoté 2023
Aligoté spent much of the last century living in Chardonnay’s shadow, useful for a kir and rarely invited to the serious table. Pataille is one of the people who helped remind Burgundy what it had forgotten. His 2023 has the energy you want from Aligoté, without the thinness you might expect.
Guillaume Gilles, Cornas 2020
Cornas has never been particularly interested in charm. Granite, steep slopes, Syrah and generations of stubborn people have done most of the work here. Guillaume Gilles belongs to that lineage. His 2020 is dark but not heavy. There is muscle, certainly, but also restraint. The kind of wine that makes you want something roasting in the oven and nowhere else to be that evening.
López de Heredia, Viña Tondonia Reserva 2006
Readers of Mizanplas already know how much we love López de Heredia. If there is one producer that belongs in an edition called Against Fashion, surely it is them. While the wine world has reinvented itself again and again, López de Heredia has simply carried on. The 2006 is now in that beautiful place we love Tondonia for. Twenty years old, neither young nor fading, it feels caught at precisely the right moment between fruit and age. We have loved López de Heredia for a long time. This bottle is a good explanation of why.
Each edition also includes a specially prepared digital booklet, where we share detailed notes on the wines and the dishes, moments, and moods we most enjoy pairing them with.
Price: £128 (includes 1 White Wine, 2 Red Wines, Customs Duty, VAT, delivery and packaging)
